CULTURAL HERITAGE ON THE ROMEA STRATA Annaberg celebrates 100-year anniversary of artist Sepp Gamsjäger

April 2, 2023 – During a musical devotion, the municipality of Annaberg, Lower Austria, celebrated the 100-year anniversary in memory of professor Sepp Gamsjäger. The commemoration took place in the local parish church Annaberg during the catholic easter celebrations. The focus was the presentation of the famous paintings “Annaberger Way of the Cross” with 14 stations. Gamsjäger created fifty years ago 14 monotype images representing the stations of the passion of Jesus Christ. It is a somewhat different kind of “Lenten veil”. Curator Traude Moser was explaining the painting technique in more detail: “They were painted on glass plates and pressed onto paper while still wet. In this monotype process, the violet, red and black colors flow into each other.” The essentials can be seen in the images, but the details are left to the individual imagination. This means that each of the images is unique. The original pictures were burned onto metal plates and set up in 14 picture frames along the Via Sacra pilgrimage way in the direction of Mariazell.
Prof. Sepp Gamsjäger (1923-1991):
From a simple lumberjack, he developed into an excellent graphic artist.” He was known far beyond Austria as a portraitist and watercolor painter. He was a teacher in his painting school, the “Gamsburg” in Annaberg, where he worked until his death in 1991. For his art, Gamsjäger received the honorary cross for art and science as well as the gold medal for services to the state of Lower Austria in addition to the title of professor.
