Icons of Carnia: discovering Cercivento, an open-air Bible

There are places you just pass through… and places you can actually read. Cercivento, located along the Romea Strata route in Carnia, is one of the latter.

On Saturday, July 18, 2026, the village will launch the new edition of Icons of Carnia (Icone di Carnia), a day dedicated to sacred art, culture, and dialogue. This event coincides with the opening of the iconographic exhibition and the traditional conference “Christian East and West”. The initiative is promoted by the Associazione Una Bibbia a cielo aperto, a member of both the European Association Romea Strata and the Miliarium network, dedicated to preserving and promoting the artistic and spiritual heritage of Carnia.

Strolling through the village streets, visitors will discover large mosaics, frescoes, and reproductions of famous masterpieces that transform Cercivento into a true “Open-Air Bible”: a unique cultural itinerary where images depict passages from the Holy Scriptures and interface with the history, art, and landscape of the area.

The day’s program features a conference dedicated to the theme “Laudate mi’ Signore cum grande humilitate. Humility, a path to dialogue”, the inauguration of the Icons of Carnia exhibition, the blessing of the new Way of Hope (Via della Speranza), guided tours along the village’s artistic itinerary, and a closing Holy Mass.

The Icons of Carnia exhibition will remain open until September 13, 2026, offering pilgrims, hikers, and visitors a wonderful opportunity to stop and experience one of the most meaningful stops along the Romea Strata in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
