La Romea Strata. Pilgrimage Routes from North-East Italy to Rome
For centuries, the Romea Strata was an essential route for pilgrims coming from Central-Eastern Europe, who crossed the Alps and the Apennines to reach Rome, the final destination of a long spiritual journey. From there, many would continue to the ports of southern Italy to embark for sacred destinations like Jerusalem or Santiago de Compostela.
This second volume dedicated to the Romea Strata focuses on three key geographical areas for the development of the route: Osttirol in Austria, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the province of Vicenza. Within these regions, four important historical routes unfold: the Romea Allemagna, the Iulia Augusta, the Romea Aquileiense, and the Romea Vicetia. These are presented at the beginning with a map that clarifies their connections and unique features.
Each route is divided into stages, each accompanied by an altimetric profile, a detailed description of the path, and numerous practical pieces of information designed to help pilgrims prepare for and navigate the journey. The guide also enriches the route with a series of historical, cultural, religious, naturalistic, and food and wine insights, providing a complete and engaging view of the territories it crosses.
