La Romea Strata. The Pilgrimage Routes of Osttirol, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Vicenza
For centuries, the Romea Strata was one of Europe’s main pilgrimage routes, traveled by those journeying from Central-Eastern Europe to Rome. After crossing the Alps and the Apennines, pilgrims would continue to the ports of southern Italy to embark for sacred destinations like Jerusalem or Santiago de Compostela.
This second volume dedicated to the Romea Strata focuses on three strategic territories for the journey: Osttirol, Friuli Venezia Giulia, and the province of Vicenza. Within these areas, four historical variations of the route unfold: the Romea Allemagna, the Iulia Augusta, the Romea Aquileiense, and the Romea Vicetia. These are illustrated in the introductory section with a map that makes it easy to navigate the different routes.
Each stage is meticulously described, accompanied by an altimetric profile and all the useful information for tackling the journey on foot or by bicycle. In addition to technical details, the volume offers cultural, historical, spiritual, naturalistic, and food and wine insights that enrich the journey and tell the story of the region in an authentic and engaging way.
