This is an entry point from Austria o Friuli Venezia Giulia, through the Via Romea Iulia Augusta

The gateway road started from Aquileia, entered the Carnic Alps and, after crossing the Passo Monte Croce Carnico–Plöckenpass, descended into the Drava Valley, finally coming near Lienz.

This route represented a was a very important Roman trade path, as all the goods that came from the East, by sea, passed thought it in order to reach the areas beyond the Alps.

Early Christianity developed strongly along this route with the arrival of the evangelist Mark from the Holy Land, as per Christian tradition. The passage of pilgrims along this route is evidenced by engravings, rock inscriptions and remains of ancient places of reception and hospitality for the pilgrims.

This route (route number 3) leads to Rome through the Via Romea Iulia Augusta Via Romea Allemagna, Via Romea Annia, Via Romea Nonantolana-Longobarda and the Via Francigena.
