This ancient route, which originated in the German city of Augsburg, was built by Emperor Claudius, and for this reason, it took the name of Via Romea Claudia Augusta. From the German city of Augsburg, the route, today known as Romantische Stra\u03b2e, reached present-day Austria. It then entered Italy through the Reschenpass \u2013 the viability through Reschenpass was favorable, as it was and is one of the lowest crossing of the Alps, and also because it was located close to the present-day border with Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Many pilgrims coming from Central Europe, while heading towards the Holy Land, crossed through this route: some by sea through the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, some by land \u2013 going first to Rome to pray at the tombs of Saints Peter and Paul, and then continuing towards Puglia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From the 1700s to the early 1900s, this route was also used by people from the area who were heading to Swabia, a province of Bavaria, to work in the countryside and in farms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
