{"id":5339,"date":"2023-07-04T17:15:02","date_gmt":"2023-07-04T15:15:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.romeastrata.org\/?p=5339"},"modified":"2025-08-05T15:34:11","modified_gmt":"2025-08-05T13:34:11","slug":"following-the-footsteps-of-saint-olav-along-the-cultural-route-in-norway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.romeastrata.org\/en\/2025\/08\/04\/following-the-footsteps-of-saint-olav-along-the-cultural-route-in-norway\/","title":{"rendered":"Following the footsteps of Saint Olav along the cultural route in Norway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The final <a href=\"https:\/\/rurallure.eu\/\">rurAllure<\/a> General Meeting took place in\u00a0<strong>Norway<\/strong>\u00a0on 26 \u2013 28 June 2023. \u00a0Organised by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.no\/\">Norwegian University of Science and Technology<\/a>\u00a0(NTNU),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/design\">Department of design<\/a>\u00a0together with the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pilegrimsleden.no\/en\/nasjonalt-pilegrimssenter\">National Pilgrim Center<\/a>\u00a0and local partners\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.lillehammermuseum.no\/\">Stiftelsen Lillehammer Museum<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mjosmuseet.no\/\">Mj\u00f8smuseet AS<\/a>,\u00a0the event was focused on the launch of the Cooperation Network and further exploitation plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The first day of the meeting took place in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.bjerkebek.no\/\">Bjerkeb\u00e6k museum<\/a>, the home of \u00a0Nobel Laureate Norwegian female writer Sigrid Undset (1882-1949), who dedicated her books to the pilgrimages in the Medieval times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The\u00a0local stakeholders\u00a0from Lillehammer Museum and the Innlandet county administration presented their projects focused on cultural heritage and arts based tourism, providing networking opportunities for all the participants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">On June 27. the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ntnu.edu\/gjovik\">NTNU Gj\u00f8vik University<\/a>\u00a0hosted a presentation and press event, presenting the project to the invited guests, journalists and external actors in the area. The project leader for Norway Ole E. Wattne presented the development of the ethnographic research and mapping along the St. Olav route and the actions with the\u00a0local stakeholders from tourism organization\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.visitostnorge.no\/\">Visit \u00d8stNorge<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gjovik.kommune.no\/\">Gj\u00f8vik municipality<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirken.no\/nb-NO\/church-of-norway\/\">the Church of Norway<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pilegrimsleden.no\/en\/regionale-pilegrimssenter\/regionale-pilegrimssentre\">regional pilgrim centres<\/a>, underlining new promotional opportunities for rural heritage and slow travel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">During the conference, the Cooperation Network for Pilgrimage Network was officially launched with signatures of the memorandum of understanding by Presidents of the Way of Mary, Via Francigena and Romea Strata.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The General Meeting gave an opportunity to discover the cultural heritage along the Gudbrandsdalsleden stretch of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/rurallure.eu\/pilots\/ethnographic-heritage-on-the-ways-to-trondheim\/\">St. Olav\u2019s Way,<\/a>\u00a0640 kilometers-long route from Oslo, along the lake Mj\u00f8sa reaching the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Among the main points of interest of the route, the group visited\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/eng.maihaugen.no\/\">Lillehammer Museum \u2013 Maihaugen<\/a>, an open-air museum of traditional architecture from the 14th\u00a0to the 20th Century; the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stavechurch.com\/garmo-stave-church\/?lang=en\">Garmo Stave Church<\/a>, built in early 1200s; the museum\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mjosmuseet.no\/mjosas-ark-kapp-melkefabrikk\">Mj\u00f8sas Ark \u2013 Mj\u00f8smuseet<\/a>\u00a0just in front of the Norway\u2019s largest lake, and the farm-museum\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/mjosmuseet.no\/gjovik-gard\">Gj\u00f8vik g\u00e5rd \u2013 Mj\u00f8smuseet.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">During the last two days the Consortium experienced the St.Olav Ways as real pilgrims: hiking and vising cultural heritage between Lillehammer and Trondheim, such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ringebustavkirke.no\/\">Ringebu Stave Church and vicarage<\/a>, one of the country\u2019s 28 remaining stave churches in Norway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The hikes included the experience reaching the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.snohetta.com\/projects\/viewpoint-snohetta\">Viewpoint Sn\u00f8hetta<\/a>\u00a0in the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park, overlooking mountains and a 7-kilometer walk from Hjerkinn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">The study trip also included a visit to the\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pilegrimsleden.no\/regionale-pilegrimssenter\/pilegrimssenter-dale-gudbrand\">Dale Gudbrand Pilgrim Centre<\/a>, located in a historic farm, and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidarospilegrimsgard.no\/en\/page\/pilgrim-center\">Pilgrim Center in Trondheim | Nidaros pilegrimsg\u00e5rd (nidarospilegrimsgard.no)<\/a>, in charge of the territorial and regional development of the route.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">\u00a0The General Meeting ended with a tour in the St. Olav ways terminus point \u2013 the most northern cathedral in Europe \u2013 the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nidarosdomen.no\/en\">Nidaros Cathedral\u00a0<\/a>, built over the burial site of King Olav II Haraldsson, the patron saint of Norway.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The final rurAllure General Meeting took place in\u00a0Norway\u00a0on 26 \u2013 28 June 2023. \u00a0Organised by the\u00a0Norwegian University of Science and Technology\u00a0(NTNU),\u00a0Department of design\u00a0together with the\u00a0National Pilgrim Center\u00a0and local partners\u00a0Stiftelsen Lillehammer Museum\u00a0and\u00a0Mj\u00f8smuseet AS,\u00a0the event was focused on the launch of the Cooperation Network and further exploitation plans.
