It represents a rich heritage that extends far beyond the trail’s most famous segments – one that we are committed to sharing in its entirety, one step at a time.

This vision inspired our journey through Lithuania alongside Cammini d’Italia: a four-day trek along the Lithuanian section of the Romea Strata to discover, experience, and highlight a lesser-known segment of our European pilgrimage route.

This expedition marked a major milestone for Cammini d’Italia as well: it was their very first story covering walking routes outside of Italy. They enthusiastically embraced our invitation, joining us on the trail and embracing every unexpected wonder the route had to offer.

ROMEA STRATA BEYOND THE ITALIAN BORDERS

Starting in Prienai, in the southeast of the country, our route took us through some of the most significant landmarks of the Lithuanian Romea Strata. Birštonas, Nemajūnai, Punia, Butrimonys, Raižiai, Alytus, Miroslavas, Dapkiškiai, Meteliai Regional Park, and Šventežeris became key stops along an itinerary thoughtfully designed to combine scenic hiking with local heritage discovery.

However, the physical distance covered was only part of the experience.

Walking the Romea Strata in Lithuania provided a deep immersion into a vibrant history and culture. The route carried us from charming village churches to Lithuania’s oldest Tatars mosque, and from local historical museums to protected natural habitats and sites steeped in intangible cultural heritage.

Then came the culinary tradition. Shared meals featuring regional dishes and authentic traditional products offered another rich dimension of Lithuanian identity, proving that truly understanding a territory means sitting down together to savor what local communities have cherished and passed down through generations.

A ROMEA STRATA POWERED BY PEOPLE

This journey was made possible thanks to the dedication of Camino Lituano, a valued member of the Romea Strata European Association, who organized and led the experience on the ground.

Behind every single stage was a strong foundation of community outreach connecting municipalities, local organizations, and residents. The warmth of their reception was extraordinary: at every stop along the trail, locals welcomed us, shared their stories and traditions, and made us feel genuinely connected to the land.

This exemplifies the exact model of the Romea Strata we aim to build. The true strength of an extensive European trail network lies not just in a line connecting multiple countries, but in its ability to foster a living human network along that path. Our regional partners play a pivotal role in this process – each understanding their local territory, cultivating relationships, and working daily to ensure the trail serves as a catalyst for heritage preservation and sustainable community growth.

A JOUNRNEY OPENING NEW HORIZONS

Bringing Cammini d’Italia to Lithuania offered an invaluable opportunity to view the route through a fresh lens, and the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Upon reaching Alytus, the content creators shared how deeply impressed they were by the route’s diversity – seamlessly blending scenic natural landscapes with rich cultural heritage – and, above all, by the genuine hospitality of the people they met. This seamless experience was made possible through our collaborative work with Camino Lituano, local organizations, and communities dedicated to providing pilgrims with an authentic experience.

It serves as a powerful validation of the vision we hold for the Romea Strata: a transformative journey that allows travelers, step by step, to traverse Europe while celebrating the unique diversity that defines it – discovering distinct languages, landscapes, traditions, spiritualities, cultural heritages, and styles of hospitality.

Lithuania marks an exciting chapter in our ongoing journey, and it is only the beginning.

Continuing to promote the Romea Strata means looking beyond familiar borders, amplifying the work of our international network, and letting the regions and their people tell the story of this great European pilgrimage route.

Our heartfelt thanks go to Camino Lituano, the local communities, and all the partners who opened their doors to us along the way. We also extend our gratitude to Cammini d’Italia for taking on the challenge, packing their boots, and joining us across the border.

We still have many kilometers, stories, and territories waiting to be shared.

<figure class="wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped
